About the Wef
Welcome to the soccer referee life of Laura Valdez.
The Wef is a name given to me by a U-8 player. It made me laugh and reminds me to not take things to seriously when it has to do with youth soccer. The kids are there to play; I'm there to be The Wef.
Lots of folks talk about keeping it fun, but The Wef's job is to keep the players safe and teach them about the Laws of the Game. Sometimes that means teaching the parent/fans and coaches a little about the Laws of the Games as well.
I've been a referee since 1989. I served as an assessor for a couple of years before moving on to being an instructor. I enjoy introducing players and parents to the perspective of the official. Follow up is through referee coaching and assigning. I also serve the local referee association as secretary.
